March 5, 2006 – Cal-Nev-Ari , Nevada – Herman Leong of Henderson Nevada has a lot to smile about lately. Leong, who recently finished a new hangar at Cal-Nev-Ari\Kidwell (1L4) to house the Glastar he completed in 2004, won AeroGraphics Design’s 2005 Sun N’ Fun Graphics Giveaway in April of 2005 and his previously all-white aircraft (see photos) is now sporting a custom Air Force Thunderbirds inspired graphics package. “It looks great!” Leong said during the installation.

“We are very pleased to present this package to Herman and trust it will provide him with years of enjoyment on his well built Glastar.” said AeroGraphics Design (AGD) owner John L. Knolla. Knolla worked with Leong via e-mail and telephone through several patriotic design iterations until Leong eventually settled on the Thunderbird scheme. When Leong’s hangar was ready, Knolla and installer Lupe Sandoval traveled from AeroGraphics Design’s Albuquerque headquarters to professionally install the custom graphics package valued at approximately $1600.

The Thunderbird graphics package consisted of 98 separate graphic components, most of which were designed by Knolla on computer and manufactured with computer driven plotter\cutters and printers at his Albuquerque shop. For the compound curves of the cowling however, good old-fashioned hand trimming was needed to pay homage to the distinctive paint schemes worn by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, based at Nellis Air Force Base near Leong’s home south of Las Vegas. Mr. Knolla said “We really enjoyed using nearly all of our “bag-of-tricks” on this package, such as computer cut vinyl for the N Numbers, Service Markings and Stars and Bars, digital prints for the Thunderbird logos, and even hand-cutting\trimming on the aircraft which is an art in itself.” The installation required just over 11 hours spanning one and a half days to complete.

Knolla also announced that AeroGraphics Design will again exhibit at Sun N’ Fun in Lakeland Florida in April. AeroGraphics Design will be in space SW-007 in the South Exhibit area, near Wittman pond and the exhibit buildings (same location as 2005). The large 20x30 space provides plenty of room for customers as well as an area to demonstrate installation techniques for vinyl graphic appliqués and paint masks.

As part of its Sun N’ Fun 2006 plans, AeroGraphics Design owner John L. Knolla announced they will once again raffle of a complete graphics package, with the winner to be announced at the end of the show. Registrations will be accepted at their exhibit space (SW-007) from April 4 to April 11. The winner will be able to select from AeroGraphics Designs growing selection of “off-the-shelf” graphics packages, or choose to have a complete custom graphics package designed specifically for their aircraft - in appliqué or paint mask format, up to an $1800 value (installation not included). Recognizing that the winner may be a builder and not immediately ready to take delivery of their graphics package, Mr. Knolla explained that the winner can take up to 18 months to pick colors and take delivery.

“We will again be providing daily demonstrations of various techniques such as vinyl-applique and spray mask use at our exhibit space and I am scheduled to give several educational forums.” continued Mr. Knolla. The forum presentations will provide technical information about paint and graphic scheme design and the installation\use of vinyl graphics and spray masks, as well as time for questions and answers. The 2005 forums were very well-attended (nearly filling the largest forum venue) and often continued past the Museum and then back at the AeroGraphics Design tent. Knolla has made his educational presentations available in both Microsoft PowerPoint and Adobe PDF formats, they can be found on the resources page of his company website at www.aerographicsdesign.com\Resources-Links.htm .
